Mid-Peninsula Rambler
Day: Saturday, March 18, 2006
Place:Crystal Springs Village Shopping Center
Time: 9:00
Driver's Meeting: 9:30
Depart: 9:45
Join us for the Mid-Peninsula Rambler!. This will be a scenic drive touring the backroads, hills, and coast of San Mateo County. As an added bonus, we’re making this a bit of an observation rally with quiz questions based on the route (keen eyes are a plus!). So bring your ’02 (or other suitable vehicle), find a navigator, and join us on Saturday, March 18!
We’ll start on the Peninsula near Hwy 92 and Hwy 280 and head over the coast range. We’ll explore some great open roads, some twisty ones, and experience some great scenic vistas on Skyline Blvd. Best of all, we’ll end up at the best and certainly most historic burger joint and beer garden on the Peninsula: Rosotti’s in Portola Valley (also known as the Alpine Inn).
Location:
We’ll meet in the mid-Peninsula area, just off Highway 92 near 280. From Hwy 92, take the Polhemus Road Exit (first exit off Hwy 92 east if coming off Hwy 280 and just East of the DeAnza Blvd exit), and head north on Polhemus (Right turn if heading West on 92, Left turn if heading East). Note that at the exit, it’s Ralston Ave to the South, and Polhemus to the North.
Go about 1 mile to the corner of Polhemus and DeAnza. On the northeast corner is the Crystal Springs Village Shopping Center. We’ll meet in the parking lot. It’s a small shopping center, so just look for the ‘02’s.
There is gas across the street (fill up for a ~60 mile drive), a Safeway and a Starbucks. What more could you ask for?
Other information
We’ll hand out a map, directions, and the route quiz at the driver’s meeting at 9:30 am. Bring a pen!
On Skyline and some of the other roads, we’re likely to share the road with bicylists and bikers, and San Mateo’s finest is often out on the weekends generating county revenue from passing motorists.

Not the 49 mile scenic drive
It's the 9th annual "Not the 49 mile scenic drive" rallye. This is a gimmick rallye. No it ain't no pitch or one joke wonder. It's a rallye that requires you to follow clues and answer questions that relate to the scenery and places you drive past. After the drive we have lunch. The drive takes place within San Francisco city limits. We had fun the last 8 years and it should be just as whacky this time.
Read the article by JP about last year's event.
Meeting Place:
The Ocean Beach parking lot on the Great Hwy. across the street from the Beach Chalet. We meet at 10 am.
