Morgan Territory Road Adventure
Co-host Larry Ayers
Meeting place: the northeast corner of the Wal-Mart parking lot in Livermore, near the 580 freeway,
Time: 10:00 AM
Map Quest
Meeting place directions:
• Almost all parts of the Bay Area take I-580 east to Livermore Look for the Livermore Avenue exit, and turn South at the bottom of the offramp.
• East Livermore or Antioch and Pittsburgh; Livermorans know where it is, and residents of the A&P cities should take Vasco Rd. to I-580 Westbound
At the next intersection, Arroyo Plaza, turn left and proceed past Home Depot to the Wal-Mart parking area. Fast food, restrooms and other supplies are available at the nearby stores; gasoline stations are within a block of your turn onto Arroyo Plaza from Livermore Avenue.
Attention:
A few notes from Larry Ayers to pass along about this Saturday's drive on Morgan Territory road.
First of all, Morgan Territory Road is officially closed (per the Regional Park District and Contra Costa County).
The problem is that about 1/3 of the roadway in about a 15 foot long section slid downhill into the canyon. That dangerous section has reflective markers to show the problem. When I walked there, I noticed tracks from a number of larger vehicles, such as pickup trucks, that safely passed and also drove around the closure barriers.
There is no real problem for a car as narrow as a 2002. Aside from the barriers, which have obvious tracks where vehicles drove around them, there are no other problems with the road (well, it is small and narrow some places, and not completely smooth; it has been that way since before our cars were new).
I suggest that we decide on a route when we gather on Saturday morning in Livermore, since there are many alternatives available if we wish to avoid the closed part of Morgan Territory Road.
Today I checked out some of those other roads just South of Mt. Diablo, and they are just as rural, winding and exciting as ever.
Collier Canyon Road, Manning Road and Highland Road wind, curve and dip like always. We can also venture to Vasco Road, if we choose, which since its realignment (it moved a few miles east when its traditional route was inundated by the new Los Vaqueros reservoir) is wide and curvaceous, but also well traveled and notorious for accidents (some drivers are dumb).
For a few miles, you can almost touch a wind turbine. Camino Diablo and Marsh Creek Road are just as before: fun to drive. We will have a few choices to make before we dine at Ed's Mudville Grille, the sports bar in Clayton (see their menu at www.edsmudvillegrill.com/menu.htm.
I'm expecting 15-20 of you to join me for curvy roads, green hills and a view; see you this Saturday!

Thanks for a great show!
Great weather, great cars and great enthusiasm were all present and accounted for on Saturday May 14th for the Bay Area 02 Swap & Show 5.
This year we had more cars than ever; proving that the Bay Area is a great place for vintage BMWs. By our count we had around 145 2002s and around a dozen coupes on display as well as a couple other specialty cars on hand..

It's the 8th annual "Not the 49 mile scenic drive" rallye. This is a gimmick rallye. No it ain't no pitch or one joke wonder. It's a rallye that requires you to follow clues and answer questions that relate to the scenery and places you drive past. After the drive we have lunch. The drive takes place within San Francisco city limits. We had fun the last 6 years and it should be just as whacky this time.
Meeting Place:
The Ocean Beach parking lot on the Great Hwy. across the street from the Beach Chalet. We meet at 10 am.
